NEWARK  — Police are looking for the driver of a black Mercedes convertible they said hit a 3-year-old child and then sped off late Sunday afternoon.

The girl was struck around 5:20 p.m. at the intersection of Ridgewood and Avon avenues in Newark's Springfield/Belmont neighborhood, according to police. The car continued south on Ridgewood and did not stop.

The driver of the car was described as having a light skin complexion with a bald head and sunglasses.

The girl, whose identity was not disclosed, was taken to Rutgers University Hospital. She was in critical condition but is expected to survive.
