There are few more beautiful and natural areas on the East Coast than the New Jersey Pine Barrens. There are also few areas that have more mysteries, rumors, and urban legends surrounding them.

If you start in Toms River and take Route 70 West on a Spring or Fall afternoon, it can be a gorgeous drive. It can also be mysterious.

One of the things I've always noticed are the small roads that branch off of the main highway. And I've always wondered...what is down there??

I'm sure some of them are private driveways to nice little homes. I see police cars hanging out there sometimes, but there are other, less well kept roads that seem to wind off into the woods with no end in sight. Is that where the Jersey Devil lives? Are there top secret government testing facilities like Plum Island is to our Long Island neighbors?

But I think that's part of the fun of driving through the Pines, the stunning visuals, the mystery, and the legends.

Can you shed any light? Have you done any exploring in the Pines? Feel free to leave a comment below!
