Rt.37 traffic was detoured for six hours early Saturday morning after Toms River Police responded to the township's fourth fatal accident this year.

Police Chief Mike Mastronardy says 37 year old John Walton, of Neptune, was heading west on Rt. 37 when he struck a pedestrian around 2 a.m.

The pedestrian is being identified as a 47 year old Minnesota man.  He was struck and killed by the dump truck while crossing the highway from south to north.

Mastronardy says The NJDOT Diversion Team Response Unit assisted with the traffic detour in the area until 8 a.m.

Traffic Safety Officer Brian Doyle is investigating along with the Ocean County Prosecutors Office, the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department and the New Jersey State Police Commercial Unit.

This is the township's second fatal accident involving a pedestrian this year.
