Pedestrian killed on Route 71 in Neptune

An Asbury Park man lost his life while crossing Route 71, near Route 33, in Neptune after being struck by a vehicle Saturday night, according to authorities.

The Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office identified the victim as 58-year-old Leonard Tobia, in a news release. Spokesman Charlie Webster said Tobia sustained immediate traumatic injuries and was taken to the trauma center at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 8 p.m.

The driver, a 44-year-old man from Wall Township, was traveling alone and has not been charged, according to Webster.

The investigation is ongoing by the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, serious Collision Analysis Response Team and the Neptune Township Police Department.
