Papal weather planner: Could rain affect events in Philly?

Pope Francis arrived in New York on Thursday afternoon to begin his visit to our area, welcomed by a mixed bag of weather with the threat of showers continuing through Sunday.

"Officials have said Sunday’s outdoor Mass will be cancelled only in the event of dangerous thunder and lightning. But that is unlikely," says meteorologist Dan Zarrow, who is keeping an eye on a low pressure area drifting toward New Jersey. "Forecast models don’t show much rain for New Jersey or Philadelphia — just some widely scattered showers."

Sunday's forecast has been the biggest toss-up of the weekend. If you are heading to Philadelphia for the Pope's late afternoon Mass, you'll find mostly cloudy skies and a chance for widely scattered showers throughout the day (especially in the afternoon and early evening). The rain doesn't look heavy at all, and most of the area should ultimately stay dry. Temperatures will remain seasonably cool, with afternoon highs in the lower 70s. 30+ mph wind gusts out of the east-northeast could make the day quite blustery, especially for those walking over the Ben Franklin Bridge. Temperatures will drop slowly during the evening Mass, into the 60s.
