A number of years ago, I went to court to fight a traffic ticket that I thought was unfair. I know it was just traffic court, but I went out of my way to wear a shirt and tie, slacks, and nice shoes. I was stunned when I got there by how many people were there in shorts and sweatpants. One guy was even wearing a tank top and flip flops.

While there wasn't a specific dress code, I felt like if I wanted things to go in my favor, I should present myself in a certain way.

Especially in a situation like traffic court, where there are literally dozens of people who have mere moments to make their case, the judge only has the information that's on paper and what he or she sees in front of them. So I had to think that the way I presented myself in court could make a difference. I was very surprised that others didn't seem to care about the visual impression that they would make.

Fast forward to today, where it's not unusual to see people shopping at the Ocean County Mall, walking the Seaside boardwalk, or at the movies in pajama pants.

I get wanting to be comfortable, but I don't get why you'd wear sleepwear out and about.

Of course, I've run out to run a quick errand in sweatpants or basketball shorts. But that's usually literally jumping in the car, running to the store to pick up what I need, and going back home.

And apparently, enough people are showing up in court in their pajamas that one judge felt it necessary to post a sign to remind people what's appropriate court-wear and what isn't.

I don't know, maybe I'm turning into a grumpy old man, but I just don't get why you'd go to court in your jammies.
