Oyster Creek Nuke Plant to Test Sirens Tuesday

The Oyster Creek nuclear generating station will test its emergency sirens Tuesday.

It's part of a twice-yearly test that the plant in Lacey Township does annually. The sirens will sound at about 10 a.m. for three minutes.

The Ocean County plant replaced 42 emergency sirens within a 10-mile radius with new units that have battery backups. The original sirens will be removed in 2014.

The purpose of the sirens is to notify residents to tune to an Emergency Alert System radio or television station in case of an emergency.

The plant produces 636 net megawatts of electricity at full power, enough electricity to supply 600,000 typical homes, the equivalent to all homes in Monmouth and Ocean counties combined. It is scheduled to be shut down in 2019.
