HOWELL — A stubborn fire at a fencing company closed an important Monmouth County road.

Fire broke out overnight Wednesday, after midnight, in a thirty feet wide by thirty feet long and twenty feet high row of wood pallets at Taylor Fence on Route 33 in Howell, according to Howell Police spokesman Det. Sgt. Christian Antunez.

An earlier call for a fire at the nearby Angle Inn Mobile Home Park brought fire and police who did not see or smell flames. A second 911 call brought fire crews to the Taylor Fence property where flames were visible in the back. Antunez said it took firefighters from all five of Howell's companies and surrounding communities to put out the flames.

Antunez said the fire is considered suspicious.

Route 33 was closed for the entire morning commute between Colts Neck Road and Route 34, affecting drivers between Freehold and Tinton Falls heading for the Garden State Parkway and Naval Weapons Station Earle.

NWS Earle and Colts Neck Fire Department responded to the scene. Howell Police EMS, Farmingdale-Howell First-Aid Squad and Howell First-Aid and Rescue Squad were also on scene.

Route 33 was reopened in both directions after 11 a.m., according to Antunez.
