Online Gaming Starts Strong [POLL/AUDIO]

Internet gambling has been live for a little over ten days in New Jersey, but more than 50,000 online accounts have already been created.

With those accounts, players can gamble real money on their favorite casino games and offer a new revenue stream to Atlantic City‘s struggling gaming halls.

As of Dec. 1, the state Division of Gaming Enforcement reported a total of 51,352 unique accounts.

“This is an excellent start for the online gaming industry,” said Roger Gros, publisher of Global Gaming Business magazine. “The numbers are very good for an industry that really wasn’t publicized that well in terms of advertising.”

Gros said Nevada and Delaware, the two other states with legal online gaming, have each only reached 10,000 accounts. New Jersey, however, has a much larger population size.

Heavy marketing has now been launched to promote online gaming, after the state got through a trial period nearly error-free, and it is available for anyone within the state’s boundaries.

According to Gros, the new type of gambling may prevent New Jerseyans from leaving the state to place their bets. Now, folks near the Pennsylvania or New York border no longer need to exit their homes.

Initial revenue numbers from online gaming will be issued in January; it has been estimated that anywhere from $200 million to $1.3 billion can be generated over the course of a year. The casinos themselves receive only a small percentage of the money won from gamblers.
