ASBURY PARK — Hours after a traditional Thanksgiving football matchup between Asbury Park and Neptune schools was canceled over the threat of violence, a person was shot dead just a mile from where the game would have been played.

The person was sitting in an SUV parked along Prospect Avenue around 11 p.m., police told News 12 New Jersey. No suspects are in custody, according to police.

The Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office has not yet returned a message from New Jersey 101.5 seeking further information.

The scene is a 5-minute drive from Asbury Park High School, which called off this year's annual Thanksgiving Day football game with Neptune Township after initially postponing the game over unspecified "credible, live threats."

The game, a 90-year-tradition, is nicknamed the "Friendship Bowl."

Asbury Park school superintendent Lamont Repollet said Wednesday the schools could not agree on a makeup date to play the game and Neptune would forfeit.

"Although I know players, alumni and fans are disappointed, be assured that we will work together with the Neptune Township School District to ensure the safety of all involved in the future and to allow this longstanding Shore tradition to continue," Repollet said in a statement.

Neptune Township school superintendent Dr. Tami Crader in a statement on her district's website said a threat was not made to either school or through the school.

"At this point, given the timing of any possible rescheduling and its impact on our ability to properly prepare or evaluate a plan for increased security, I have advised our staff and Asbury Park that we cannot reschedule," Crader said.

Neptune now officially concludes its season with an 0-10 record while Asbury Park finishes with a 6-4 record.
