I could go back to the well of "should we be able to pump our own gas?" over and over again, and we could get a brisk debate going about it every time. But this isn't about whether we should be able to or not, it's about one of the things that still happens when getting a fill-up that drives me crazy..

In this day and age where the overwhelming percentage of transactions at the gas pump are either by credit or debit, there is no reason to round up and top off the tank.

If we're being honest, even when people are paying cash there's no reason, since most gas stations are pre-pay and the pump automatically dispenses the exact amount of fuel.

Back in the day when you'd fill up first and pay after, yeah it made sense to round up to an even price so you're not messing around with finding the right change or getting back a handful of coins.

So it turns out that topping off the tank to round up isn't only pointless, but it could be damaging to your car and literally be washing money back into the station's tanks.

I try to put a stop to it when I notice it happening, but it's awkward, I don't want to come off like a jerk. But when I hear the attendant trying to top the tank off I'll say, "don't worry about it, it's fine".

So please, to all of the gas station attendants out there, not only is there no reason to round up the cost of the sale on the pump, I actively don't want you to!

Does this happen to you? Do you prefer your sale be a round number? Comment below and let us know what you think!
