New stores coming to the area is always a popular topic of conversation, and possibly as soon as this year, a European mega-chain could be opening some of its first American doors right here in Ocean County.

Both the Asbury Park Press and NJ.com are reporting that Germany-based chain Lidl is not only working on nearly a dozen locations for New Jersey, but one is being planned for Route 9 in Lacey Township.

Lidl is basically Europe's version of Walmart, with over 10,000 stores across the continent. While their stores are a common sight on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, they have yet to make inroads in the U.S. market.

But they're actively working on changing that, possibly by as early as this summer.

Their first foray into America is being focused on the East Coast, with at least 10 stores in various stages of planning for New Jersey, including; Cherry Hill, Gloucester Township, Burlington Township, Cinnaminson, Mantua, Egg Harbor Township, Millville, Hazlet, Eatontown, and the previously mentioned Lacey Township location.

Some, like the Cherry Hill location, are just in the consideration phase. While others, like the Lacey and Eatontown locations, have already gained approval and are in the active planning stages.

We'll of course keep you updated as more specifics, including projected opening dates, come out.
