Temperatures across New Jersey will make a run for 90° today, but an approaching cold front will end this streak of summer-like weather and return us to near-normal.

Here are your weather headlines for Tuesday, May 12, 2015...

The big weather question today... Will we hit 90°? It’s a definite possibility. We haven’t hit 90s in New Jersey since about Labor Day 2014, and so today may very well earn the title of warmest day of 2015 so far.

The remnants of Tropical Storm Ana are well out to sea, and this morning’s chance of showers or storms is rapidly fizzling. So there’s really nothing to hold back the surge of very warm air today, pushing temperatures into the 80s by lunchtime. Our official high temperature forecast today for inland New Jersey is 84° to 89°... but don’t be surprised to see a few 90s on the temperature map this afternoon too. Even the Jersey Shore will be on the warm side today, as a brisk southwest-northwest wind this afternoon keeps the sea breeze away. (Maybe not 90° along the coast, but 80s are certainly possible.)

Record highs for today are 92° at Newark, 93° at Trenton, and 90° at Atlantic City.

Back to Spring

A cold front will push through New Jersey starting this evening, and the ensuing cooler and drier air will put an end to this streak of warm, humid, summerlike weather. Tomorrow morning’s temperatures will be much cooler than the past several mornings, in the lower to mid 50s. And Wednesday afternoon will be at least 20° cooler than Tuesday, in the upper 60s. (To get technical, for the May 13 calendar day, the official "high temperature" will likely occur at exactly Midnight tonight and the daily "low temperature" will likely occur at 11:59pm tomorrow night.)

Cooler temperatures take full effect by Thursday morning. Most lows will end up in the lower to mid 40s on Thursday, but a few 30s will be possible in the coldest spots. (That’s right, this week’s forecast includes temperatures both in the 90s and the 30s!) If temperatures on Thursday morning fall to about 37° or less, patchy frost may develop... that seems to be limited to far North Jersey at this point.

Thursday and Friday will be seasonable and springlike, as highs end up near-normal... around 70°.

Weekend Woes?

So far this Spring, practically every weekend has featured really nice weather... but this weekend will not qualify. As a warm front lifts through New Jersey from Friday night through Saturday night, we’ll see a persistent chance of rain. Just about everyone in New Jersey will likely get wet on Saturday. Additionally, some embedded thunderstorms could become strong or even severe, with gusty winds and heavy downpours. (At the moment, the best timing for those heavy storms looks to be Saturday late afternoon and evening.)

We might salvage a decent day for Sunday, if the front and the precipitation kicks out of here in time. For now, you might want to brainstorm a backup plan for any outdoor events on Saturday.
