One More Chance for Toms River

The New Jersey State Little League Championships will end tonight in Berkeley Township when Toms River faces Ocean City/Upper Township in a one-game showdown to determine who represents the state in the Mid-Atlantic Regional which gets underway later this week in Bristol, Connecticut.

The kids from Toms River could have clinched the title Sunday but fell to the team from South Jersey 10-6 which forces a second championship game tonight between the teams who have split a pair of games in the double-elimination tournament.

Toms River does appear to have a clear advantage in that they’ll send a well-rested Jonathan Giordano to the mound as he has not pitched in five days and can throw the maximum 85 pitches tonight.  Meanwhile Ocean City will be without their top two hurlers and will need to depend on others.

In Sunday’s game Toms River fell behind 7-1 after two innings but had chances to get back in the game. The Mapletree Road gang just could not come up with the big hit.  Giordano was 2-2, including a home run but was intentionally walked in his final two at-bats while Christian Wood had three hits for Toms River, including a 2-run homer.  So it all comes down to 7pm tonight in Bayville with the winner moving on and the loser turning in their equipment.

It seems people have very different thoughts on anniversaries. Some make a big deal over just about all of them while others ignore the dates. This past Friday was my 33rd wedding anniversary and Jane and I celebrated the occasions with our good friends Joe and Darlene Gomulka.  We enjoyed a fabulous dinner at Chef Mike’s ABG in South Seaside Park (thanks for the special deserts Mike).

Sometime this week and I think its tomorrow will be my 35th anniversary at WOBM.  I believe it was July 29, 1979 that I walked into what was then our office building and studio on Route 9 in Bayville to begin what I thought would be a “pit stop” on my way to fame and fortune.  I was 23 years old, was making $175 a week and full of optimism.

35 years later I am unsure of whether the anniversary is one to celebrate on surviving that many years in this business or lament on a career that has fallen short of expectations.  Oh well. Happy anniversary to me.
