Thomas Kubes, 71, was pronounced dead at the collision site on Route 530 near Lacey Road, according to Manchester Township police. Fred Wood, Jr., 69, was flown to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, and was listed in stable condition.

Investigators called to the crash site at about 4:30 PM believe that Wood's 2006 Lexus GS, moving westbound on Route 530, veered over the double-yellow center line and the center turn lane, into the path of Kubes's eastbound 2016 Ford Escape.

When officers arrived, the Escape was facing north on the berm of the eastbound lanes, and the Lexus was pointed east in the eastbound lane.

Police characterized Wood's injuries as non-life-threatening.

Also responding to the crash were members of the Whiting Volunteer Fire Department, Quality Medical Transport, the Ocean County Sheriff's Office and the County Prosecutor's Office.
