A call for help on the New Jersey Turnpike took an unexpected turn for both the driver and police.

A father-to-be was taking his pregnant wife to her doctor for a check-up when her water broke prior to her due date around exit No. 15 in Newark, according to New Jersey State Police.

Troopers Robert Ravotto, Detective I Jason Kazan, Trooper II Robert Ciecwicz, and Detective Robert Kilmurray responded to the 911 call from the southbound side around 2:43 p.m., and two minutes later the baby was prematurely on its way, State Police said. In an announcement of the call, State Police described the child as a "speeding baby."

Another trooper, Robert Ravotto, a certified EMT, helped with the delivery by tying the girl's umbilical cord, wrapped the baby in a blanket and cleared her airway, police said. A first aid squad eventually arrived after being delayed by traffic, police said.

Mother and daughter were taken to University Medical Center in Newark and are doing well, police said. The involved troopers were praised by the center's staff for keeping the mother and girl from going into shock in the cold and windy weather, according to police.
