Elizabeth cop shoots at driver coming toward him, incident under investigation.

The Union County Prosecutor's Office is investigating an incident in which an Elizabeth Police Department lieutenant used his service weapon against a motorist who was driving toward him after striking a pedestrian.

According to Acting Union County Prosecutor Grace Park, the incident took place Sunday, just after 3 a.m. outside The Lobby — a nightclub and restaurant located on Spring Street in Elizabeth.

In a press release Monday, Park said the police lieutenant involved in the incident and another uniformed officer were on security at the nightclub when they responded on foot to a report of a fight outside the facility

"While the two officers approached the scene, the suspect vehicle struck the victim, an adult male, then continued in the direction of the officers, going the wrong way down a one-way off-ramp," Park said in the press release. "The police lieutenant fired a single round from his service weapon before the suspect vehicle quickly left the area, heading north on Routes 1&9."

The prosecutor said it is still unclear whether the round struck the vehicle or its occupants. According to the investigation, the only known injury as of now is the pedestrian who was struck by the vehicle at the scene.

The pedestrian who was struck was taken to Trinitas Regional Medical Center in Elizabeth for treatment. The driver of the vehicle "remains at large," the prosecutor said.

The initial investigation was conducted by the Union County Prosecutor’s Office Special Investigations Unit, the Union County Sheriff’s Office Identification Unit and the Union County Police Department.
