Police say the 59-year-old was in a 2008 Chrysler, headed south on the highway approaching Sunset Avenue at about 1:31 PM. The collision occurred, say investigators, when a 53-year-old man from Pleasant Valley, New York turned his 2011 Lincoln SUV through the opening in the concrete divider, across oncoming traffic, to reach westbound Sunset.

Neither driver's identity has been disclosed, but police say the Neptune woman was rushed to Jersey Shore University Medical Center with internal and face injuries. The SUV driver was cited for infractions including careless driving and an illegal turn.

Investigators are in search of witnesses. Patrolman Randy Slawsky at the Ocean Township Traffic Safety Bureau can be reached at 732-531-1800.
