A Toms River man is dead after being shot by police in North Carolina Thursday morning while stabbing his wife in a bank parking lot, according to NJ.com.

Authorities said Darrell Haymon knifed his wife Lorrie in the chest and was holding her when cops arrived at a PNC Bank in Hope Mills around 10 a.m. Two officers fired when Haymon refused to drop the knife.

Haymon died at the scene despite attempts by emergency responders to save him. Lorrie Haymon was taken to an area hospital. Her condition is unknown.

It's unclear what led to the dispute between the Haymon's.

The couple had been staying with relatives in North Carolina while looking for homes there. They have three adult children.
