David Byrnes, 51, was pronounced dead at the scene after sustaining numerous traumatic injuries, police said.

Investigators were called to the stretch of highway fronting the Wingate Hotel, in the Farmington section, at 12:43 AM. They concluded that Byrnes entered the path of the eastbound Jeep Wrangler, driven by Israel Torres, 29, of Ventnor. Police said that Torres swerved left, but could not avoid Byrnes.

The eastbound highway underwent a three-hour closure in the aftermath. Police said that no summonses have been issued, pending the results of the investigation.

Egg Harbor PD Officers Robert Moran, Patrick Daly and Joseph Griffiths are conducting the probe.

Also responding were members of the Farmington Volunteer Fire Company, Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office, Tri-Care EMS, and AtlantiCare paramedics.
