An announcement on the college's website stated upgrades needed would cost too much and the pool is not handicapped accessible because of the age of the building.

According to the statement signed by Norma Betz, Vice President of Student Affairs and Ilene Cohen, Executive Director of Athletics, OCC is unable to commit the necessary resources to continue operating the pool, so it will close effective August 14, 2015, and possibly sooner.

The Patch reports the pool filters are over 22 years old and replacement parts are hard to find or are no longer available. The time clock system also is obsolete and would cost to much to replace.

The closing of the pool could have a rippling affect on area swim teams, including high schools, which  used it for practice and meets.
