Obama walked on stage to the thunderous cheers of thousands of party faithful. His convention speech in Charlotte, N.C., set White House markers for the campaign’s final push.

The president conceded the problems facing the nation are serious, especially the economy. But he said, “You didn’t elect me to tell you what you wanted to hear. You elected me to tell the truth.”

Obama also declared that the terrorist network al Qaida is, quote, “on the path to defeat and Osama bin Laden is dead.”

He said, “I won’t pretend the path I’m offering is quick or easy,” but he said that the challenges the country faces can be met if people work together.

Obama says his foreign policy has been tested, proven

When it comes to defense and foreign policy, President Barack Obama has told Democratic National Convention delegates that his leadership has been “tested and proven.”

After Democrats noted that Mitt Romney made no mention of Afghanistan during his speech at the Republican National Convention, Obama said that the U.S. has “blunted the Taliban’s momentum” there — and that the nation’s longest war will be over in two years.

Obama got one of his biggest cheers when he said, “al-Qaida is on the path to defeat, and Osama bin Laden is dead.”

Obama said Romney and Paul Ryan are “new to foreign policy,” but that they appear to want to take the nation back to “an era of blustering and blundering.”

He noted that Romney had offended some Britons by suggesting that they weren’t ready to host the Olympics. Obama said, “You might not be ready for diplomacy with Beijing if you can’t visit the Olympics without insulting our closest ally.”

President Barack Obama’s daughters made a rare campaign appearance with their dad at the Democratic convention.

Sasha and Malia Obama sat with their mother, Michelle Obama, near the stage as the president addressed the convention and accepted his party’s nomination for a second term. His daughters joined him on the stage after his speech, smiling and waving to the crowd as confetti fell.

Obama says he’s proud of his daughters and grateful they could see him speak. But he says he still expects them to go to school on Friday.
