Tomorrow, a national memorial service will be held for North Korean leader Kim Jong Il, who died Dec. 17 of a heart attack.

Today, tens of thousands of North Koreans lined the snowy streets of Pyongyang to watch as Kim's black hearse wound its way through the capital for his funeral service.

Mourners, some in military uniforms, wailed and clutched their chests as the funeral procession went by. On top of the limousine that led the procession was a huge portrait of a smiling Kim.

At the end of the procession, Kim's youngest son and successor, Kim Jong Un, walked along with his father's hearse, his hand gave a salute. The young Kim stood head-bowed with top officials as rifles fired 21 times.

The funeral began and ended at the memorial palace where Kim Jong Il had lain in state. One weeping soldier standing in the snow asked state TV, "How can the sky not cry?"
