SOUTH HACKENSACK — A woman charged with drunk driving over the weekend told police she didn't know how a large NJ Transit sign ended up going through her car.

Maria Vazquez, 52, of Hawthorne, was stopped by police early Saturday morning when Patrolmen David Polanco saw her driving down Route 46 with the sign sticking through her car, according to a press release from the department. Vazquez hit the sign in Secaucus and kept driving until she was stopped, police said.

"Thankfully no one was seated in the backseat of the vehicle or this could have been a different situation," Capt. Robert Kaiser said.

Vazquez was given a field sobriety test and was taken to police headquarters for a blood alcohol test. Police did not disclose what her results were from the test.

Prior to being released pending a December court date, Vazquez was charged with driving while intoxicated and careless driving.
