The rear of a UPS tractor trailer burst into flames when it was rear ended while in the center lane by a box truck, killing the driver, 33 year old Phillip Frey of Toms River according to a preliminary investigation by State Police.

The driver of the UPS truck was not injured.

Southbound traffic was forced off the Turnpike at Exit 9 causing delays on Route 1, Route 130 and other side roads that picked up extra traffic.

Many drivers were stuck all night on the Turnpike for nearly 8 hours, trapped between exits.

A separate incident on the southbound side of the Turnpike near Interchange 10  closed the road there as well for a time.
