NJ Transit Gears Up for Super Bowl Week [AUDIO]

If you’re planning to attend any fan-friendly events in the Meadowlands during Super Bowl week in February, transportation officials want you to leave the car at home and take mass transit.

“The parking is going to be limited – this is the first mass transit Super Bowl,” said New Jersey Transit Executive Director Jim Weinstein.

He said there’s a critical mass that’s got to rely on public transportation for this to work.

“You’re just not going to park at the Meadowlands and at Met Life stadium the way you normally would,” he explained.

To help inspire people to take a train or a bus, Weinstein said his agency will be offering a transit Super Pass during Super Bowl week.

“People can use it on all of our modes, they can use it on our rail system, on our bus system anywhere, on our light rail system,” he said. “And if our regular customers want to buy a Super Pass for that week and use that in place of daily tickets, it is going to be available to them.”

“We didn’t think it was fair to make a special deal available to guests – that wasn’t also available to our customers.”

Weinstein stressed all of the activity surrounding Super Bowl week should not cause any problems for regular NJ Transit commuters.

“We’re not worried about it screwing things up for them just because we’ve got more people on the system. We think we can handle that, we’ve got special train schedules, special bus schedules,” Weinstein said.

“But having said that, the reality is there are going to be several hundred thousand people coming into our region, who are going to be hopefully relying on the mass transit system. It’s challenging, but we take this very seriously, we think we’re prepared to meet the challenge.”
