NJ Transit delays — Track out of service Monday, April 24
NEWARK — NJ Transit riders face yet another day of delays due to track inspection at New York Penn Station.
Track 7 was taken out of service on Monday morning for inspection, causing 30 minute delays in and out of New York Penn Station on the Northeast Corridor, North Jersey Coast Line, Raritan Valley and MidTown Direct lines, according to Amtrak spokesman Mike Tolbert.
"It's not our intention to disrupt service, but as inspections occur and work needs to be done we plan to give it that attention," Tolbert told New Jersey 101.5. He said it was mainly NJ Transit being affected by the work.
Service was bakc to normal with some residual delays by 1 p.m. on Monday.
NJ Transit riders were delayed up to 60 minutes on Sunday because of switching problems and maintenance on the Portal Bridge.
Amtrak, which operates and maintains the tracks and equipment on the Northeast Corridor and at Penn Station New York, has come under scrutiny in recent weeks following a series of derailments that led to delays and crowded trains for NJ Transit riders.
Gov. Chris Christie, who cancelled the ARC Tunnel project in 2010, said on Thursday's Ask the Governor program he is proud of his transportation record. He defended his handling of NJ Transit, saying the amount of the money from the state budget to the agency is up by more than half and said capital funds have now been increased.
“The fact of the matter is when you’re moving that many people every day, some days it’s not going to work perfectly,” Christie said.
On questions about overcrowding: “Our trains are going to be crowded, given the number of people who increasingly use New Jersey Transit.”
