KEARNY — A fire under the Portal Bridge temporarily shut down the Northeast Corridor on Thursday morning.

NJ Transit service on the Northeast Corridor, North Jersey Coast Line, Raritan Valley Line and the Midtown Direct was suspended for about a half-hour and was restored by 10:30 a.m. with a 45 minute delay.

Amtrak spokeswoman Kimberly Woods told New Jersey 101.5 the small fire under the Portal Bridge in Secaucus also halted Amtrak service. The fire was quickly contained, accoridng Woods, and an investigation continues into the cause of the fire.

Cross-honoring is in effect with NJ Transit buses, private carriers and PATH trains at Newark Penn Station, Hoboken, and 33rd street in New York.

The Portal Bridge, located in Kearny and Secaucus, carries about 450 trains per day between Newark and New York. It is a century-old swing bridge. It is slated for replacement by a fixed-span bridge as part of Amtrak's Gateway Program.
