NJ residents don’t have to go to the country to eat a lot of peaches
This year's New Jersey peach crop is one for the books, according to state Secretary of Agriculture Doug Fisher.
For the 5,500 acres of peaches this season, Fisher says, "the growing conditions were just right." He says last year was "a little bumpy. This year it is perfect and the taste profile is there. They are sweet and juicy."
Fisher says we will see between 55 million to 60 million pounds of New Jersey peaches.
"Not only is it going to be one of the biggest crops that we have had in a while, I am telling you, if you are ever looking for a Jersey peach, the quality is extraordinary this year."
"I would say also that if you bring home a peach, and it is not quite ripe, put it in a paper bag, put it on a counter, and then when it ripens up, put it in the refrigerator, and you will have perfect peaches every time."
Fisher says early warmth was followed by just the right weather mix in the state to yield a great peach.
We asked him if the New Jersey peach was better than the famous Georgia peach.
"you know, there is a window in the south that opens up a little bit earlier, and Georgia peaches are good. But Jersey peaches are better."
