NJ Budget Expected To Get Committee Approval Today [AUDIO]

Gov. Chris Christie could have the Fiscal Year 2014 budget in his hands very soon.

Committees in both the State Senate and the General Assembly are expected to approve a budget bill today and both full houses of the legislature are likely to pass it Monday. The final details were still being hammered out behind closed doors late last night.

“The tone and tenor of budget talks has been cooperative which is very nice to see,” says Assembly Republican Budget Officer Declan O’Scanlon. “My friends on the other side of the (political) aisle are poised to complete a document that is in the spirit of what the Governor first put on the table.”

In February, Christie proposed a $32.9 billion spending plan.

“It will not exceed that number,” vows O’Scanlon. “It will still be lower than Governor (Jon) Corzine’s last budget…..It isn’t perfect. It’s hard to create a perfect document that is going to get agreement on both sides of the aisle, but it is so far looking to be a very good and reasonable document.”

The state has to live within its means says O’Scanlon and it cannot increase spending and can’t spend money it doesn’t have. The Assemblyman feels this budget bill reflects that lawmakers understand all of that.
