A new report finds residents living in Jersey’s largest cities are a lot more likely to get into a crash than other motorists in most parts of the country.

The Allstate Insurance Company has released its eighth annual “Allstate America’s Best Drivers Report.”

That’s based on Allstate claims data. It ranks America’s 200 largest cities in terms of car collision frequency to identify which cities have the safest drivers.

Allstate New Jersey spokesman Danny Jovic says, “Unfortunately, New Jerseyans crash into each other more than the national average, but you know traditionally New Jersey cities rank low on this report – and I don’t think it’s a surprise considering that New Jersey is the most densely populated state in the country.”

The report shows people living in four cities in Jersey – Newark, Jersey City, Paterson and Elizabeth – have a significantly higher likelihood of getting into a crash than drivers living in other parts of the nation between 42 and 59 percent higher.

He says this means “the average driver in Newark will into a car crash every 6 years, and that’s 60 percent higher than the national average, which is every 10 years.”

So how can you driver safer – no matter where you live?

Jovic says the best way to driver safer is to avoid distractions like texting while driving or using your cell phone.

“You’re 23 times more likely to get into a car crash if you’re texting and driving. Another good tip is to allow plenty of time to reach your destination – we know that people that drive are in a rush. They’re more prone to driving erratically.”

He adds another good idea is to review your driving directions in advance before you go.

“In the event that you do get lost, you’ll want to find a safe place to pull over and sort yourself out. We know people get frustrated when they’re lost, and unfortunately when you’re frustrated and you’re driving, you tend to cause accidents…And don’t try to reprogram your GPS when you get lost- just pull over when it’s safe, sort yourself out.”
