Navy Enlistee from Howell Brings “Jersey Strong” Spirit to Philippines
Naval Aircrewman Third Class Peter Olson learned something of storm desolation when his hometown of Howell was caught in Superstorm Sandy. Now he's delivering relief to typhonne victims in the Philippines as as part of Operation Damayan.
Olson, a tactical helicopter specialist, loaded supplies onto an SH-60B Seahawk from the "Scorpions" of Helicopter Anti-Submarine Light (HSL) 49, Det. 6, assigned to the guided missile cruiser USS Cowpans (CG 63).
The Ticonderoga-class cruiser is with the George Washington Strike Group supporting the Third Marine Expeditionary Brigade sent to assist the Philippine government.
Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda is believed to have left more than 10,000,000 victims in its harrowing wake.
