You had better think twice before trying to pull the wool over the eyes of the folks at the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC).

The agency is using high-tech methods to ferret out fraud and its security team is getting very good at it.

"One of the most substantial and promising initiatives of late is 'Operation Facial Scrub,'" explains MVC chief administrator Ray Martinez. "Just over 14 months ago, the MVC's security team began weeding through and analyzing an initial scrub of our entire 19 million photo record database."

Operation Facial Scrub is designed to detect fraud, protect the integrity of MVC operations and give law enforcement confidence that the information they rely on is accurate. To date, almost 5,000 data base corrections have already been made.

"2,617 separate criminal acts of fraud versus the MVC have been detected," says Martinez. "Over 750 cases have already been referred to the (State) Attorney General or other law enforcement entities."

185 cases involve people trying to avoid driver's license suspensions. 75 had DWIs and were trying to avoid penalties. 65 were commercial driver's license holders.

"Six were sex offenders hiding in plain sight under assumed names," says Martinez. "31 were individuals avoiding court-ordered child support."
