The FBI defines the most serious forms of "violent crime" as murder, manslaughter, rape, robbery and aggravated assault. But the FBI also counts property crimes of burglary, larceny-theft and motor vehicle theft in the category.

In a recent Patch article, the latest figures were released for "violent crimes" here in New Jersey. We took that data and narrowed it down to the top towns here in Ocean & Monmouth Counties. See if Your town made the FBI list.

According to Patch, the numbers come from the latest FBI Uniform Crime Report released this week, using statistics from the most recent year available (2016).

Here are the communities with the highest violent crime rates, showing the number of incidents per 1,000 people:

  • Asbury Park 14.1
  • Seaside Heights 9.009
  • Neptune Township 5.7
  • Long Branch 3.456
  • Keyport 3.22
  • South Toms River 3.21
  • Eatontown 3.18

Here are the communities that had the biggest increases in violent crime between 2011 and 2016:

  • Lakewood 77
  • Toms River 50
  • Berkeley Township 20
  • Manalapan 10
  • Manchester 10
  • Stafford Township 10
  • Freehold Township 8
  • Monmouth Beach 7
  • Tinton Falls 6
  • Eatontown 5
