New Jersey State Police have issued a warning about a potentially lethal blend of heroin involved with several dozen overdoses in Camden County.

The state Regional Operations and Intelligence Center said heroin labeled "Batman" as being associated with 49 non-fatal overdoses reported in Camden since last Tuesday.

According to New Jersey State Police spokesman Sgt. Jeff Flynn said that while every dose of heroin can be lethal, "when we have something that is linked to overdoses and we know for sure that this particular brand is more lethal than other brands then we have an obligation to notify the public of that in hopes that maybe somebody doesn't take this particular brand or at least uses a little more caution."

The Courier-Post reported that the drug was given to users by way of free "samples."

Cincinnati police dealt with 78 overdoses in two days last week and a pubic health emergency was declared in surrounding Hamilton County for an "unprecedented" number of emergency room incidents attributed to lethal heroin. The Batman brand was not specifically mentioned in connection with the Ohio cases.
