The struggling economy may have been responsible for keeping married couples together. Lawyers in New Jersey and across the country have noticed a spike in divorces since the nation started crawling out of the recession.

"We've seen a dramatic uptick," said Bari Weinberger of Weinberger Law Group in Freehold and Parsippany. "The divorce filings have just increased and increased."

During the economic downturn, she said, spouses were less comfortable with the idea of divorce because their financial situations were never certain. One wasn't sure if Wall Street would recover or if the housing market could rebound.

"I think people are feeling a little more secure in the equity they have in the home and their anticipated future lifestyle," Weinberger added.

With a sense of job stability and a "light at the end of the tunnel," couples are feeling more confident they can take care of themselves.

The price of getting divorced could be a primary reason for the trend as well. It has essentially stayed the same, but the high cost may have deterred couples a few years ago. A solid income and increased mobility allows people to get the legal representation they need.

"They can feel more confident in paying for it themselves with a little bit of cash on reserve," Weinberger said.
