Mold remains one of the top hazards for the Sandy recovery, but with so many different types, health officials in hard-hit Ocean County hope to dispel misconceptions and spread awareness.

In collaboration with The University Of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ), the Ocean County Health Department has been hosting a series of mold awareness seminars during the past few weeks. There are several more scheduled for this and next month at various sections of the Jersey Shore.

According to Ocean County Health Department Spokesperson Leslie Terjesen, many out-of-towners are coming back to the area for the first time since the storm hit – and that goes for second homeowners and beach property owners, who are looking to get started with the cleanup process.

“You can’t just go in the house and start work – safety is a paramount issue when it comes to cleaning up. This means preparing yourself.”

Did you know using bleach to kill mold could sometimes make it grow worse?

When you apply bleach to kill mold on a porous surface, (i.e. wood, drywall, grout, carpet, etc.) the chlorine molecules stay on the surface and will only kill a fraction of the mold while the water in bleach (bleach is mostly water) sinks into the material and actually promotes further growth.

The next session will be held this Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at 1100 Bay Boulevard in Seaside Heights.

There will also be one on June 1st from 9:30 a.m. till 12:30 p.m. at the visitation church relief center in Brick Township.
