Stormy Summer Day 20160621

Here are your weather headlines for Tuesday, June 21, 2016...

Unsettled Tuesday

New Jersey's first full day of summer will be stormy, as we experience two rounds of rain: one Tuesday morning, and the other from Tuesday afternoon through the evening hours.

Parts of the Garden State have been experiencing a light show in the sky, thanks to some widely scattered thunderstorms. Popup showers and a band of steadier rain will affect the northern third of NJ through about 8 a.m.

The Tuesday midday hours will feature a lull in the rain, and we should see a period of solid sunshine. (Having said that, there could certainly still be a shower or storm over New Jersey at any given time today.) High temperatures will peak in the mid to upper 80s for most of the state Tuesday. I would not be surprised at all to see a few 90s scattered about Tuesday afternoon too.

The big concern Tuesday will be another threat for thunderstorms between about 2 p.m. and 10 p.m. Sparked by an approaching (weak) cold front and fueled by the abundant moisture and heat, any storms that pop up Tuesday afternoon are likely to become strong (40+ mph) to severe (60+ mph). The most likely location for strong thunderstorms will be the southern half of New Jersey (below Interstate 195). Pockets of heavy rain, damaging winds, hail, and even an isolated tornado will be possible.

As storms taper off Tuesday evening, skies will clear. Patchy fog may develop by Wednesday morning, especially in areas where it rains on Tuesday. Lows will only fall into the 60s, as humidity will likely remain prevalent through Tuesday morning.

Nice, Summery Wednesday

The ultimate effects of the aforementioned cold front will be felt by midday Wednesday. Our new air mass won't be that much cooler - highs on Wednesday should still reach the above-normal mid 80s. But the decrease in humidity will be noticeable, and very much welcome.

Overall, Wednesday looks like a very nice early summer day.

Wet Again Thursday

Weather in a word for Thursday? Tropical.

Our next storm system arrives on Thursday, with widespread wet and stormy weather expected across New Jersey. Rain is likely from early morning to late evening on Thursday - so yes, it may rain for most or all of the day. Some of the rain may be heavy and/or steady, especially Thursday morning. Some of the storms could be on the strong side, especially Thursday afternoon. Meanwhile, it will be windy and very humid, with dew points soaring into the 70s. High temperatures will be in the lower to mid 80s. Again, with the rain, high humidity, and very warm temperatures, it's going to feel tropical across the Garden State.

The Weekend

I had to include a fourth headline to address the upcoming first weekend of summer.

Quite frankly, it looks beautiful!

Sunshine abounds as high pressure builds in. Highs on Friday will be in the comfortable upper 70s to lower 80s. The current forecast for Saturday and Sunday calls for lower to mid 80s.
