Police said the car driven by John Jones veered across the center line from the eastbound to westbound lanes near mile marker 34.5 at about 12:33 PM, into the path of a semi driven by William Nortei, 53, of Grand Prairie, Texas.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts, investigators determined. Field reports said that Jones's car boomeranged backwards into the eastbound lanes while Nortei's truck hurtled to a stop on the same side.

According to police, Whiting volunteer firefighters were forced to extricate Jones from the mangled Nissan Altima. He was flown to Helen Fould Hospital with internal injuries.

Investigators ask anyone who might have seen the crash, or have information that can help their probe, to call 732-657-2009, extension 4400.
