Man tries to run girlfriend over at Toms River gas station

A Toms River man wanted for the attempted murder of his girlfriend at a Route 37 gas station early Sunday morning by allegedly trying several times to run her over with his pickup truck has been captured.

Police say James Crudup, 44, pulled into the Hess gas station on Route 37 with his unidentified 35-year-old girlfriend. According to reports, the pair began to fight outside the truck. Crudup allegedly threw the woman to the ground and choked her. As she ran towards the pumps, Crudup got back in his 2000 brown Dodge Durango pickup and backed up towards her. Police say a Hess employee tried to get the woman out of the way but the pickup still hit the woman and pinned her between the bumper and a gas pump.

As the woman lay on the ground, police say Crudup backed up again and over her legs, hitting a gas pump and a kiosk. Crudup struck her a third time before leaving the station and heading west on Route 37.

Police say Crudup was apprehended early Sunday evening but did not offer further details.  He is charged with attempted murder as well as numerous motor vehicle violations with bail set at $500,000.

The woman was taken to Jersey Shore Medical Center where she was treated for her injuries. The two share a residence Toms River according to police.
