Man found dead from fire in tent in Ocean Township Friday

A 51-year old man was found deceased in a tent that had caught fire around 2:55 am this morning, according to the Ocean County Prosecutors Office.

Police and fire units made the grim discovery at 140 Seneca Boulevard where the fire had completely destroyed the tent.

An investigation determined the origin of the fire came from the east side of the tent.

The cause of the fire has been ruled accidental, although prosecutors say improper use of a space heater, within close proximity to available combustibles could not be eliminated as the contributing factor.

Ocean County Prosecutors Office Arson Unit, Ocean County Sheriff’s Department Crime Scene Investigations, Ocean County Fire Marshal’s Office, Ocean County Medical Examiner’s Office and Ocean Township Police Department Detective Bureau were requested to respond to conduct a scene examination into the origin and cause of the fire.

The public is reminded that criminal charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
