Making Medical Help Available at the Mall [AUDIO]

When Hoboken attorney Dustin Friedland was shot during a botched carjacking at the Short Hills Mall last December, emergency responders were delayed in providing treatment. A New Jersey lawmaker wants to make sure such a scenario is never repeated.

State Sen. Dick Codey (D-Livingston) sponsors a measure that would require all malls in the Garden State to have on-site emergency vehicles that can access all levels of all parking decks on the premises. The ambulance that rushed to Short Hills last year was too tall, and didn't fit in the parking garage. Friedland died a short time later.

"Time is a big factor in whether or not people can survive heart attacks, strokes, and in this case, a shooting," Codey said. "From what I've heard from law enforcement and other people, they might have been able to save him. We don't know that for sure, but seconds and minutes count, and if you can't get your vehicles in there we lose those precious seconds."

Codey is co-sponsoring the bill with Sen. Tom Kean Jr. (R-Westfield).

"Who cares, it's not about Republicans or Democrats," Codey said. "It's about doing the right thing for people, and hopefully saving some lives in the future."
