Magazines at the checkout counter at the new BJ's Wholesale in Howell will remain covered, despite individual complaints, according to the Lakewood Scoop.

The magazines are covered out of respect for the Jewish community and shoppers who were inadvertently exposed to the sometimes-provocative magazines on display racks near cash registers.

The Lakewood Scoop posted a copy of one of the complaints BJ's received:

WOBM News reached out to BJ's corporate media relations department to determine if the decision is system-wide, is case-by-case, or has precedent in any of its other markets. The company response is as follows:

"At BJ’s Wholesale Club, two of our core values are respect and community.  We are a new business in Howell and when we enter a new community, we are always respectful of how business is done.  Our decision was made to show consideration toward the sensitivities of our Members."

A spokesperson did not elaborate on procedure if recognition of one group's sensitivities is perceived by another group as an infringement.
