Next Wednesday is National Letter of Intent Day when senior high school football players can officially accept and sign scholarship offers. Between now and then college coaches are spending most of their time trying to sway those who are uncommitted while making sure their verbal commitments stay true to their word.

Penn State coach James Franklin is expected to be at Barnegat High School this morning to chat with linebacker Manny Bowen who committed to the Nittany Lions last summer.  Bowen has received some 30 scholarship offers and is the 8th rated player in New Jersey and despite his pledge to Penn State many schools have still been talking with him.  Barnegat teammate Sam Madden announced last weekend he is heading to the University of Georgia.  I will be all over the place on signing day as a host of Shore Conference players make it official.

Quite an honor for Manasquan basketball standout Marina Mabrey but nothing new in her family.  She is among 24 senior girls from around the country to be selected McDonald’s All-Americans and as such she will participate in the All-Star game on April 1st at the United Center in Chicago.  Mabrey’s older sister Michaela played in the 2012 McDonald’s All-American Game before heading to Notre Dame which is where Marina will be bound for next year.

The younger Mabrey is averaging 26 points per game this season for Manasquan and was the MVP of last month’s WOBM Christmas Classic.  Younger sister Dara, who is just a freshman, starts for the Warriors as well and shows signs of being the next great player in the family.

The Toms River North boy’s basketball team has not let up on the gas since winning the WOBM Classic last month.  The Mariners improved to 13-1 overall and 8-1 in Class A South with a 67-57 victory over Toms River East last night.

Sophomore Mike Nyisztor, who was the Christmas Classic MVP, poured-in 23 points for North who lost second leading scorer Pat Marinaccio to an ankle injury in the 1stquarter.  The Mariners have a big A South ma

tchup tomorrow night at Southern Regional.  North’s only loss this season came against Brick Memorial.
