A public lewdness charge against a Toms River 52-year-old represents an ongoing drive by police to remediate quality of life in the township's parks.

Police said they apprehended a man in a Winding River Park rest room just before noon on August 22, He is accused of pleasuring himself in an open stall, while a 74-year-old man watched.

The arrest took place after park visitors reported several complaints of inappropriate behavior, police said.

The initiative continues until aberrant behavior in the parks is rooted out, authorities said. "Incidents such as lewdness, consumption of alcohol, and drug use are specifically being targeted as a result of information being brought to our attention," officials said in a prepared release. "Undercover officers will continually be monitoring our public locations so that our residents can feel safe while enjoying the park system with their families."

Police said the onlooker was not charged.
