Lavallette Police Chief Colin Grant faces a simple assault charge filed Friday night by Toms River police.

According to information from the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office, Toms River police responded to a reported domestic dispute at the Bay Lea Fairways complex Friday night at 11:54.They were met by a 40-year-old woman who identified herself as Grant's girlfriend who shares the dwelling with him.

She told police that Grant attacked her during an argument. The complaint summons alleges injury. Investigators say they found notable redness and an abrasion on her neck.

Grant, 48, surrendered his on-duty and off-duty weapons and underwent processing. County Prosecutor Joseph Coronato says his staff will undertake an internal investigation independent of the charges.

Information in the Asbury Park Press indicates that Grant has taken personal leave, using vacation and compensation time while the investigation and court proceedings continue. Sergeant Ray Toscano fills the position temporarily.

Mayor Walter LoCicero told APP that the Borough Council will determine whether his pay would continue or stop if the matter isn't resolved when his accrued time is spent.

State records, according to Toms River Patch, indicate that Grant,48 a 15-year member of law enforcement with a 2012 salary of $114,356 as chief.
