A Lakewood Police Officer is hospitalized while trying to subdue a disorderly man Sunday night.

Detective Sergeant Greg Staffordsmith tells WOBM News Officer Junior Vega was treated and released from Kimball Medical Center after breaking up a fight between a man and woman on Lexington Avenue.

Officer Vega arrived at the scene around 10:45 p.m. to find 49 year old Edward Vega, who appeared to intoxicated, yelling and cursing at a woman while he was trying to walk into oncoming traffic.

“Edward Vega began to struggle and struck Officer Vega in the chest,” says Staffordsmith. ”Officer Vega was able to subdue the suspect until Officer Michael Marzocca arrived as back up.”

Police say Edward Vega is being charged with Assault on a Police Officer, Resisting Arrest, and Disorderly Conduct.  He is locked up in Ocean County Jail on $7,500 bail no 10% option.
