27 beds were found in a single-family Lakewood home that caught fire from a space heater Monday morning, according to Ocean County investigators.

The Asbury Park Press reports the East End Avenue home appeared to be serving as an an illegal dorm. Fire officials said the home was not registered as a dorm and did not have a sprinkler system as required by state law, according to the Asbury Park Press.

All of the male occupants escaped unharmed, after being alerted by a smoke alarm around 6 a.m., according to fire officials. Neighboring homes were evacuated while firefighters doused the blaze, according to Lakewood police.

The fire is believed to have been sparked by a space heater that ignited an air mattress, according to the Asbury Park Press, and is not considered suspicious.
