A Lakewood apartment fire early Sunday morning has displaced 35 people

Three people were also hospitalized by the fire in an apartment building on Forest Avenue and 4th Street which broke out around 5 a.m. according to the LakewoodScoop.com.

Several early risers who called for help heard screams and  glass breaking as flames shot out of the building.

Lakewood Police Sgt. Summer Cunliffe tells the Asbury Park Press that one unit in the building was severely damaged by the fire, while other units sustained lesser damage.

The Lakewood Police Department acted as a temporary shelter awaiting the arrival of the Red Cross to assist.

All Lakewood companies responded to the blaze as well as Brick’s Fast Team, Lakewood First Aid and EMS.

The Ocean County Fire Marshall's Office is investigating but the fire appears to be an accident.
