A Freehold woman who was allegedly driving aggressively and harassing a family in the car behind her by waving a knife on Route 9 in Howell ends up getting arrested following a police pursuit.

Police received a 9-1-1 call around 11:30 am on Thursday from a 22-year old woman who was in the car with her parents when she said the driver in front of them in a white Ford Focus began driving aggressively and "brake-checking" them.

The driver, later identified as 51-year old Diane Maloney, then allegedly began waving an 8-inch folding, tactical-style knife out of the window at the caller and her family.

In an effort to simply get away and move on, the caller's vehicle tried to drive past the suspect vehicle several times but kept getting blocked from doing so.

A Howell Patrolman located the suspect vehicle a short time later and attempted to initiate a motor vehicle stop in the area of Rt. 9 S/Georgia Tavern Road.

Maloney reportedly refused to stop and continued to drive erratically down Route 9 south.

As she approached New Friendship Road, she made an illegal u-turn around the concrete barrier where she was confronted by Police Chief Andrew Kudrick who spotted her holding the knife.

Maloney still refused to stop and continued north of Route 9 weaving in and out of traffic.

Upon approaching stopped traffic at the intersection for Georgia Tavern Road, Maloney drove around around the other vehicles, disregarded the red traffic signal, entered the intersection and collided with a 2011 Toyota Rav 4 operated by 66-year old Frederick Ledger of Howell.

After the collision, Maloney exited her vehicle and tried to flee on foot but was instead arrested by Chief Kudrick.

Maloney suffered minor injuries and the knife was found inside her vehicle.

She was transported to CentraState Medical Center.

Ledger sustained moderate injuries and was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center for treatment.

Both Ledger and Maloney were the only occupants of their vehicles.

Maloney was criminally charged with eluding, terroristic threats, possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes, unlawful possession of a weapon and assault by auto and was issued several motor vehicle citations.

Police say additional charges may be issued after toxicology results are known.

Maloney was transferred to the Monmouth County Correctional Institute after her release from the hospital.

As per policy, the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office Professional Responsibility Unit was notified and responded to the scene.

They will review the event to ensure policy compliance.

The Monmouth County Serious Collision Analysis Response Team also responded to conduct the crash investigation.

The Howell First-Aid and Rescue Squad, Howell Police Emergency Medical Services and the Adelphia and Southard Fire Companies responded as well.
